BatteryTest(OpenCircuitTest)
Useamultimetertomeasurethevoltagebetweenthebatteryterminals.
SetthemultimetertotheDCvoltssetting.Thebatteryshouldbeatatemperature
of16ºto38ºC(60ºto100ºF).Thekeyswitchshouldbeoffandallaccessories
turnedoff.Connectthepositive(+)meterleadtothepositivebatterypostand
thenegative(−)meterleadtothenegativebatterypost.
Note:Thistestprovidesarelativeconditionofthebattery.Loadtestingofthe
batterywillprovideadditionalandmoreaccurateinformation(seeServicingthe
Battery(page6–49)).

Thisisasimpletestusedtodetermineifachargingsystemisfunctioning.Itwill
tellyouifthechargingsystemhasanoutput,butnotitscapacity.
UseadigitalmultimetersettoDCvolts.Connectthepositive(+)multimeterlead
tothepositivebatterypostandthenegative(−)multimeterleadtothenegative
batterypost.Keepthetestleadsconnectedtothebatterypostsandrecord
thebatteryvoltage.
Note:Uponstartingtheengine,thebatteryvoltagewilldropandthenshould
increaseoncetheengineisrunning.
Note:Dependingupontheconditionofthebatterychargeandbattery
temperature,thebatteryvoltagewillincreaseatdifferentratesasthebattery
charges.
Starttheengineandrunathighidle(2650RPM).Allowthebatterytochargefor
atleastthree(3)minutes.Recordthebatteryvoltage.
Afterrunningtheengineforatleastthree(3)minutes,batteryvoltageshouldbe
atleast0.50volthigherthaninitialbatteryvoltage.
Anexampleofachargingsystemthatisfunctioning:

GlowPlugSystemTest
Thisisafast,simpletestthatcanhelptodeterminetheintegrityandoperation
ofyourReelmasterglowplugsystem.Thetestshouldberunanytimehard
starting(coldengine)isencounteredonadieselengineequippedwithaglow
plugsystem.
Useadigitalmultimeterand/orinductiveAmmeter(AC/DCCurrentTransducer).
Properlyconnecttheammetertothedigitalmultimeter(refertomanufacturers’
