About Drum-Maps
Drum-Maps are similar to pitch-tables in that they replace voices 5 and 6 in a program with a set
of parameters which redefine the pitch of individual keys on the keyboard. Drum-Maps do not
have the same tuning resolution as pitch-tables, but they add the ability to also assign different
waves, volume levels, panning, and voice output assignments to individual keys across the
keyboard. This feature is particularly useful for creating complex keyboard assignments for
percussion applications, hence the name “Drum-Map.”
One very useful aspect of this feature is the ability to construct a TS-10 program which emulates
the key mapping and sonic characteristics of an external drum machine or percussion sound
module, allowing you to record and play sequencer tracks which are compatible with the maps
used by any external MIDI device. You may also exercise your creativity in coming up with
other uses for the remapping functions provided by this feature.
The basic function of a Drum-Map is to control how keys are assigned to voices, and to provide a
certain set of parameters to control how the voice is played. When you play a key, the system
looks in the drum-map for information about pitch, volume, panning, wave type, and destination
voice(s) for that particular key. Based on this information, the key is sent to one or more voices to
be played. The exact way that the key will sound depends both on the information in the drum-
map and the parameter settings of the destination voice(s).
Drum-Maps contain information about 61 keys. This represents the range from B1 to B6 on the
TS-10 (MIDI keys 35 to 95). This range was designed to comply with the General MIDI Drum-
Map spec.
