3.4.5 Ash
Provides online ash measurement of the paper.
How It Works:
The measurement operates on the principle of preferential X-ray absorption, in
conjunction with basis weight and moisture measurements.
3.4.6 Formation
Provides measurements of size and distribution of flocs.
How It Works:
The formation sensor measures characteristics of sheet formation by analyzing
fluctuations in a transmitted light beam caused by movement of the sheet past the beam.
By sensing the strength and distribution of the light variations, it is possible to quantify
“Floc Intensity” and “Floc Size”.
3.4.7 Gloss
A non-contacting measurement of sheet gloss using a light-emitting diode (LED) source.
The sensor can provide gloss measurements according to DIN or TAPPI measurement
standards.
How It Works:
The Precision Advanced Gloss Sensor measures visible reflections from one side of the
paper sheet.
The gloss of flat paper and paperboard can be defined as the fraction of incident light that
is specular reflected from a sample when the angles of incidence and reflection are the
same. Gloss is actually a sensory perception that can change from one observer to
another, so care is taken to specify precisely the details of the measurement.
3.4.8 Coat Weight
This sensor measures the weight of the coating applied to a base sheet. Can also be used
to detect moisture content of the coating.
How It Works:
Infrared measurement that can measure various coating materials, including clay, latex
and calcium carbonate.
3.4.9 Z Axis
This sensor measures the vertical distance between the upper and lower heads during on-
sheet measurements.
The sensor measures variations in the gap due to beam deflection, and inserts corrections
into the measurements made by the basis weight sensor to compensate.
