1. Install the capacity license if needed. See Installing Additional Licenses.
Each VLS9000 node comes pre-installed with a base capacity license for one VLS9000 array
(one base disk array enclosure and three expansion disk enclosures). Upgrade capacity licenses
(one per array) must be installed if more than one array is installed per node in a VLS9000-series
system.
CAUTION:
If an array is added to a VLS before the upgrade capacity license for the additional array
is installed, a capacity license violation will occur.
If the capacity license violation is detected during boot, this will disable the VLS storage
capacity, so that the VLS is unable to perform for read/write operations. VLS storage capacity
is re-enabled once the capacity license is installed on the VLS (without needing to reboot).
If the capacity license violation is detected when Discover Unconfigured Storage is selected,
this will prevent the new array from being added to the VLS. However, the VLS will remain
operational. When the capacity license is installed, the new array is automatically added
to the VLS (without needing to reboot).
2. Install the array into the rack. See Installing the Disk Array Enclosures into a Rack on page 50.
3. Cable the array to the VLS. See Installing VLS9000 Cables on page 58.
4. Power on the array. See Powering on VLS9000 Arrays on page 133.
5. Add the new disk array storage to the VLS.
If your system is running firmware version 3.x, reboot the entire VLS.
If your system is running firmware version 1.x or 2.x, you can reboot the VLS or:
a. Open a Command View VLS session and log in as the administrator. See
Opening a Command View VLS Session from a Web Browser on page 143.
b. In the Storage tab navigation tree, select Storage LUNs.
c. Select Discover Unconfigured Storage from the task bar.
Removing a VLS9000 Capacity Kit
Remove capacity by decreasing the number of VLS9000 arrays installed in your VLS9000-series
system. At least one array must be installed for every node installed in a VLS9000-series system (except
in the 7.5 TB and 10 TB systems which can have a single disk array enclosure).
Removing arrays from the system destroys all current virtual tapes in the system. Once arrays are
added to the VLS, the only way they can be removed from the a VLS storage pool is by powering off
the nodes, removing the arrays, powering on the nodes, then running Rebuild All Storage Pools (see
Rebuilding all Storage Pools). This will delete the arrays from the configuration and reformat the
remaining arrays into working capacity.
In addition, if you add a used VLS9000 capacity kit to another system you must perform the steps
listed in this section and then run Rebuild All Storage Pools in order to add the capacity to your system.
This destroys all current virtual tapes in the system while it reformats all the arrays to reflect the new
working capacity.
