If the level drops to 5 percent (empty), the warning icon
ashes yellow. Engine torque will be reduced 50 per-
cent and engine speed will be reduced 40 percent after
45 minutes.
If the operator continues to ignore the warning and
the DEF tank is still not relled after an additional 45
minutes, the warning icon will illuminate red and ash
continuously. At this point, there will be no available
torque--the engine will only idle.
In either of these conditions, relling the DEF tank will
restore engine performance.
If the DEF tank level has fallen to 0 percent, a STOP
warning symbol will also illuminate and ash red. At
this level, there is no ability for DEF injection (or DPF
regeneration described later) into the exhaust system,
therefore no ability to cool the DEF injector as needed.
The DEF injector may now be damaged by heat and
require replacement from your authorized dealer.
DEF TemperatureDEF Temperature
If the DEF becomes too hot, the engine warning light will
illuminate in the top screen banner, a diagnostic mes-
sage will pop up on the screen, and the soft key banner
will change.
If the uid temperature reaches 120° F, a diagnostic
message appears, instructing the operator to fill the
DEF tank to lower the temperature. (Figure 4-13)
Figure 4-13. DEF Temperature >120° Alert Message
If the uid temperature reaches 140° F, the diagnostic
message warns the operator that DEF sensor damage
may occur at this temperature level. (Figure 4-14)
To prevent sensor and possibly engine
damage, shut down the engine to allow the DEF to
cool, then ll up the DEF tank if needed.
