Glossary
Analyte see Urine analyte.
Analyzer The URISYS 2400 instrument.
Arbitrary units Result classification using 1+, 2+,
3+ classes instead of numerical concentration
results.
Backup The saving of data onto storage media,
such as diskettes, other than that of the main storage
(hard disk). If this data is required again, it can be
restored from the backup copy.
Barcode A numeric or alphanumeric code used on
sample tubes and racks for sample and rack
identification.
Barcode type The URISYS 2400 can read different
sample barcode types: Code39, NW7 (Codabar),
ITF, and Code 128.
Blanking Setting the water transmission of the
flow cell to 100% before each measurement of the
urine clarity.
Calibration To adjust the reflectance photometer
to a gray standard (calibration strip) with known
reflectance values.
Calibration strip Gray plastic strip used for
calibrating the photometer of the
URISYS 2400analyzer.
Charge-coupled device (CCD) Photoelectrical
detector used in the URISYS 2400 to determine the
angle of total reflection of light for the measurement
of the specific gravity of the urine sample.
Check digit (C/D) Barcode verification number.
Clarity (CLA) Feature of urine samples
determined by measurement of the percentage value
of light transmission. Results can be CLEAR,
LIGHT TURBID, or TURBID.

Code39 A barcode type for sample tubes that can
be read by the barcode reader.
Color (COL) Feature of urine samples determined
by measurement of the compensation pad on the
test strips.
Color development Color change that occurs on
the test pads of the test strip as a result of a chemical
reaction with the urine analyte.
Compensation pad A blank pad on the test strip
used for the determination of the urine color and
for the prevention of false positives when a urine
sample is strongly colored.
Cross-feed line Rack transport line that moves
racks from the input line along the barcode reader
and the sampling position to the output line.
Data alarms Symbols that indicate values outside
a specified range or an abnormality in sample or test
strip processing.
Diskette An MS-DOS compatible 3.5-inch
diskette used for the storage of data and programs.
Expiration date For test strip cassettes, the date
after which the contents must not be used in
analytical tests. Also applies to calibration strips and
to controls.
Flow cell A component in the URISYS 2400
analyzer used to measure specific gravity and clarity.
