8.8.3 TCR calculator
The TCR calculator can be used to determine the temperature coefficient (TCR) of the
heating element used.
DANGER
Fire hazard due to uncontrolled heatup
Using heating elements with temperature coefficients that are too low or incorrect cod-
ing of the temperature controller causes uncontrolled heatup. The heating element can
burn through, creating an arc in a certain limited space.
Install touch protection.
Use a heating element with the proper temperature coefficient.
Set the correct temperature coefficient in the temperature controller.
Set the correct temperature range in the temperature controller.
DANGER
Fire hazard due to uncontrolled heatup
Setting temperature coefficients that are too high leads to uncontrolled heatup. The
heating element can burn through, creating an arc in a certain limited space.
Install touch protection.
Use only temperature coefficients that are plausible for the heating element.
Application
The real temperature coefficient of the heating element often differs from the standard
value. The material composition and processing influence the properties of the heating
element. This causes the temperature display of the temperature controller to differ
from the real temperature of the heating element. Using the TCR calculator allows the
TCR value to be easily corrected and the temperature display of the temperature con-
troller and the real temperature of the heating element to be better matched.
Settings
• The timer is switched off (Machine menu, menu number401, OFF)
• The temperature coefficient is variable (Heating element menu, menu num-
ber301, Variable)
• A typical temperature setpoint for the sealing application is selected (Settings
menu, menu number101 or via analog input, terminals 36+39)
Note
In the Diagnosis menu, menu number503, switch off temperature diagnosis while
the TCR calculator is in use. This prevents unintentional alarms when changing the
temperature coefficients.
Calculation
To calculate the TCR value, the temperature at the heating element is measured in
control mode using an external temperature sensor (e.g. a thermocouple). Depending
on the setting in the Heating element menu, menu number303, the temperature
can be measured in this way:
• Internally (user input of the temperature value in the Heating element menu,
menu number304, using the up and down buttons)
• Externally (setpoint) (temperature sensor at analog input, terminals 36+39)
Note: When this setting is applied, the analog input no longer serves to specify the
sealing temperature. In this case the sealing temperature is set in the Settings
menu, menu number101.
• Externally (CH1) (temperature sensor at analog input, terminals 39+40)
Give the START signal.
