InSpec Sampler Controller SECTION 4: IP SETTINGS
45
If the primary DNS server fails, a secondary DNS server is often provided as a fall back. If
DHCP is enabled the secondary DNS server address should be obtained from the DHCP server.
However, you can still enter a static secondary DNS server address. This will then act as a fall back if
the DHCP server fails to provide a secondary DNS server address. Naturally, the specific configuration
you chose will depend on the advice of your local network administrator.
InSpec Menu Options = View current / set static.
4.1.9 SMTP URL Address
What is an SMTP URL?
This is the IP address of the SMTP Server. SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. This is the
protocol that sends emails between machines. Besides the SMTP IP address, you will also need to
configure the username settings for the InSpec email function to work. This is configured via Email Setup
in the system menu.
InSpec Menu Options = View current / set SMTP IP.
4.1.10 Print URL Address
What is a Print URL?
This is the IP address of the network printer that you wish to print to via the Ethernet.
InSpec Menu Options = View current / set print IP.
4.1.11 NTP URL Address
What is the NTP URL?
See 4.2 NTP Setup (Network Time Protocol Setup)
InSpec Menu Options = View current / set NTP IP.
4.1.12 View MAC Address
See “VIEW MAC ADDRESS” in section 2.9.7.
4.2 NTP Setup (Network Time Protocol Setup)
The NTP (Network Time Protocol) menu allows you to enable the ability to periodically update the
system time of the InSpec automatically via a reliable internet clock source. This is useful to maintain an accurate
time. All systems lag eventually. Over weeks, months and years a significant amount of time lag can accrue.
By default, the NTP server on the InSpec is set to be ‘POOL.NTP.ORG’. This is an internationally
recognised free NTP URL. It consists of a pool of shared NTP servers that allow external devices such as the
InSpec to connect and request a time update. The underlying IP address of this URL will regularly change as the
InSpec obtains the network time from a different location. If you use the POOL.NTP.ORG URL you will never
need worry about entering a numerical IP address. The resolving of IP addresses is explained next.
4.3 Resolving IP Addresses
The InSpec continually resolves the internal URL string registers into IP addresses. You can see via the InSpec
registers how a URL address is changed into the four octets of an IP address. The internal URL string registers
used to specifically identify a server or a device and the associated INT16 registers that store the octets are:
4.3.1 EMAIL DEFAULT SMTP PORT = 25
String Register
4 IP Registers
S_SMTP_SERVER_URL
I_SMTP_IP_ADDR0,I_SMTP_IP_ADDR1,I_SMTP_IP_ADDR2,
I_SMTP_IP_ADDR3
