InSpec Sampler Controller SECTION 2: COMMON SOFTWARE FEATURES
31
PRIMARY DNS
The Primary DNS server translates domain names meaningful to humans into
the numerical identifiers called IP address that are associated with networking
equipment for locating and addressing devices worldwide. An often-used analogy to
explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet
by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example,
www.example.com will translate to an IP address like 192.0.32.10. If DHCP is enabled
the primary DNS server address is obtained from the DHCP server. However, you can
still enter a static primary DNS server address. This will then act as a fall back if the
DHCP server fails to provide the address of the primary DNS server or DHCP is
disabled in the InSpec. Naturally, the specific configuration you chose will depend on
the advice of your local network administrator.
SECONDARY DNS
If the primary DNS server fails, a secondary DNS server is often provided as
a fall back. If DHCP is enabled the secondary DNS server address should be obtained
from the DHCP server. However, you can still enter a static secondary DNS server
address. This will then act as a fall back if the DHCP server fails to provide a
secondary DNS server address or DHCP is disabled in the InSpec. Naturally, the
specific configuration you chose will depend on the advice of your local network
administrator.
SMTP URL ADDRESS
The InSpec can email reports, configuration files and notify a specified
recipient of active alarms as they occur. To do this a valid SMTP server URL address
has to be entered. This section has nothing to do with DHCP. You will need to obtain
the address of a local server that supports the simple mail transfer protocol from your
network administrator. An alpha-numerical SMTP server name can be entered, e.g.,
our.mailserver.com, or an IP address like 192.168.0.10.
PRINT URL ADDRESS
The InSpec can print batch reports, logs, register files and UCL files. To do
this a valid URL address for an Ethernet printer has to be entered. You will need to
obtain the URL address of a local printer from your network administrator. An alpha-
numerical SMTP server name can be entered, e.g., our.printserver.com, or an IP
address like 192.168.0.10.
NTP URL ADDRESS
In this section you can set the NTP URL server address and view the
associated IP Address of the URL.
VIEW MAC ADDRESS
The MAC address (Media Access Control address) is a unique identifier
assigned to most network enabled devices (network cards/pc’s etc) by the
manufacturer for identification. This unique identifier is essential, at a hardware level,
for higher protocol/software layers to recognise individual devices on a network. The
MAC address is associated with a specific hardware device. The MAC address is
sometimes referred to as the ‘Ethernet hardware address’. Conversely, you can think
of an IP address as being associated with the software layer on the physical device.
Unique MAC addresses are purchased in blocks from an IEEE standards authority.
In this menu item you can only view the MAC address. An operator will never
set the MAC address. A Jiskoot Engineer sets this at the factory. Once the MAC
address has been set it can never be changed. For this reason, great caution has to
be exercised when setting the MAC address onto a new InSpec.
2.9.8 USER COMMANDS
User commands is a method by which an input or output calculation can be derived
from two source registers and the result is then assigned to a destination register. It is best to
think of this as a very simple one off UCL style calculation. Likely, anything more complicated is
likely to require UCL anyway. However, this facility remains as a simpler option.
