Solving Modem Problems

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Modem loses
connection.
The cable connection
from the telephone
line to the modem
is loose.
Ensure that the telephone
cable is properly
connected.
Call Waiting has not
been disabled.
To disable Call Waiting,
click Start

Control Panel

double-
click the Modems
icon

General tab
Æ
Dialing Properties.
NOTE: If you do not know
the disable call waiting
code for your dialing area,
contact your local
telephone company.
No dial tone. Phone service is not
connected to the
telephone wall jack.
Verify service from the
local telephone company.
The modem is not
responding to
commands from the
keyboard.
To verify the modem and
computer are connected:
1. Click Start

Programs
Æ
Accessories
Æ
HyperTerminal.
2. Go to Terminal Mode,
then type AT and
press Enter.
If the modem
displays OK, the
modem and
computer are
working together.
If the modem
displays ERROR, or
does not respond,
restart the computer
and repeat step 1.
3. Type ATDT and listen
for a dial tone.
4. Type ATH0 to
hang up.
