8 Characteristics of the PROFIBUS DP
transmission
On the PROFIBUS-DP’s physical layer, the data are transferred in accordance with the RS-
485 standard.
The following table presents the basic technical features of the RS 485 transmission used for
PROFIBUS-DP.

Cable lengths specified in Table 11 refer to cable type A with the following parameters:
• Surge impedance 135
Ω up to 165 Ω
• Capacitance per unit length < 30 pF/ m
• Loop resistance 110 W / km
• Core diameter 0.64 mm
• Core cross-section > 0.34 mm²
