•Locatethedocumentationthatcomeswiththeharddiskdriveandfollowthoseinstructionsinadditionto
theinstructionsinthischapter.
•Asageneralconsideration,donotmixstandard512-byteandadvanced4-KBformatdrivesinthesame
RAIDarraybecauseitmayleadtopotentialperformanceissues.
•Makesurethatyouhaveallthecablesandotherequipmentthatarespecifiedinthedocumentationthat
comeswiththedrive.
•Selectthebayinwhichyouwanttoinstallthedrive.
•Checktheinstructionsthatcomewiththedrivetodeterminewhetheryouhavetosetanyswitchesor
jumpersonthedrive.IfyouareinstallingaSATAdevice,besuretosettheSATAIDforthatdevice.
•Thesimple-swapservermodelssupportuptosixteen2.5-inchoreight3.5-inchsimple-swapSATAhard
diskdrives.Donotinstallhot-swapdrivesintoasimple-swapservermodel,itisnotsupported.
•Youcaninstallone2.5-inchsimple-swapSATAharddiskdrivesinbay0intheserver.Donotinstall
hot-swapdrivesintoasimple-swapservermodel,itisnotsupported.
•Thesimple-swapservermodelsareavailableonlyinnon-RAIDconfigurations.
•Theelectromagneticinterference(EMI)integrityandcoolingoftheserverareprotectedbyhavingall
baysandPCIExpressslotscoveredoroccupied.WhenyouinstalladriveoraPCIExpressadapter,
savetheEMCshieldandfillerpanelfromthebayorPCIExpressadapterslotcoverintheeventthat
youlaterremovethedevice.
Toinstallasimple-swapharddiskdrive,completethefollowingsteps:
Step1.Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginson“Safety”onpagevand“Installationguidelines”on
page297.
Step2.Turnofftheserverandperipheraldevicesanddisconnectthepowercordsandallexternalcables.
Step3.Removethefillerpanelfromtheemptydrivebay.
Step4.Touchthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainsthedrivetoanyunpaintedmetalsurfaceonthe
server;then,removethedrivefromthepackageandplaceitonastatic-protectivesurface.
Step5.Installtheharddiskdriveinthedrivebay.Alignthedriveassemblywiththeguiderailsinthebay
andgentlypushthedriveintothebayuntilthedrivestops.
