•Beforeyouinstalloptionalhardware,makesurethattheserverisworkingcorrectly.Starttheserver,and
makesurethattheoperatingsystemstarts,ifanoperatingsystemisinstalled,orthata19990305error
codeisdisplayed,indicatingthatanoperatingsystemwasnotfoundbuttheserverisotherwiseworking
correctly.Iftheserverisnotworkingcorrectly,see“RunningtheDSAPrebootdiagnosticprograms”on
page82
forinformationabouthowtorundiagnostics.
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareawhereyouareworking.Placeremovedcoversandotherparts
inasafeplace.
•Donotattempttoliftanobjectthatyouthinkistooheavyforyou.Ifyouhavetoliftaheavyobject,
observethefollowingprecautions:
–Makesurethatyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
–Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
–Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouliftaheavyobject.
–Toavoidstrainingthemusclesinyourback,liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles.
•Makesurethatyouhaveanadequatenumberofproperlygroundedelectricaloutletsfortheserver,
monitor,andotherdevices.
•Backupallimportantdatabeforeyoumakechangestodiskdrives.
•Haveasmallflat-bladescrewdriver,asmallPhillipsscrewdriver,andaT8torxscrewdriveravailable.
•ToviewtheerrorLEDsonthesystemboardandinternalcomponents,leavetheserverconnectedto
power.
•Youdonothavetoturnofftheservertoinstallorreplacehot-swappowersupplies,hot-swapfans,or
hot-plugUSBdevices.However,youmustturnofftheserverbeforeyouperformanystepsthatinvolve
removingorinstallingadaptercablesandyoumustdisconnectthepowersourcefromtheserverbefore
youperformanystepsthatinvolveremovingorinstallingarisercard.
•Blueonacomponentindicatestouchpoints,whereyoucangripthecomponenttoremoveitfromor
installitintheserver,openorclosealatch,andsoon.
•Orangeonacomponentoranorangelabelonornearacomponentindicatesthatthecomponentcanbe
hot-swapped,whichmeansthatiftheserverandoperatingsystemsupporthot-swapcapability,youcan
removeorinstallthecomponentwhiletheserverisrunning.(Orangecanalsoindicatetouchpointson
hot-swapcomponents.)Seetheinstructionsforremovingorinstallingaspecifichot-swapcomponentfor
anyadditionalproceduresthatyoumighthavetoperformbeforeyouremoveorinstallthecomponent.
•Whenyouarefinishedworkingontheserver,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.

Thesystemreliabilityguidelinestoensurepropersystemcooling.
Tohelpensurepropersystemcoolingandsystemreliability,makesurethatthefollowingrequirements
aremet:
•Eachofthedrivebayshasadriveorafillerpanelandelectromagneticcompatibility(EMC)shield
installedinit.
•Eachofthepower-supplybayshasapowersupplyorafillerinstalledinit.
•Iftheserverhasredundantpower,eachofthepower-supplybayshasapowersupplyinstalledinit.
