Attention:
Microprocessorsaretoberemovedonlybytrainedtechnicians.
Important:Alwaysusethemicroprocessorinstallationtooltoremoveamicroprocessor.Failingtouse
themicroprocessorinstallationtoolmaydamagethemicroprocessorsocketsonthesystemboard.Any
damagetothemicroprocessorsocketsmayrequirereplacingthesystemboard.
Donotallowthethermalgreaseonthemicroprocessorandheatsinktocomeincontactwithanything.
Contactwithanysurfacecancompromisethethermalgreaseandthemicroprocessorsocket.
Droppingthemicroprocessorduringinstallationorremovalcandamagethecontacts.
Donottouchthemicroprocessorcontacts;handlethemicroprocessorbytheedgesonly.Contaminants
onthemicroprocessorcontacts,suchasoilfromyourskin,cancauseconnectionfailuresbetween
thecontactsandthesocket.
Installationtoolhastwosettingsforinstallingtwodifferentsizesofmicroprocessors.Thesettings
thataremarkedonthetoolare“Lforsmallerlowcoremicroprocessors,and“H”forlargerhighcore
microprocessors.

Step1.Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginson“Safety”onpagevand“Installationguidelines”on
page297.
Step2.Turnofftheserverandperipheraldevicesanddisconnectallpowercords.
Step3.Removethetopcover(see“Removingthetopcover”onpage149).
Step4.Removetheairbaffle(see“Removingtheairbaffle”onpage152).
Step5.Locatethemicroprocessortoberemoved(see“System-boardinternalconnectors”onpage29).
Step6.Ifyouareremovingmicroprocessor1,removethememorymodulesfromDIMMconnectors6and
7.Ifyouareremovingmicroprocessor2,removethememorymodulesfromDIMMconnectors18
and19.See“Removingamemorymodule”onpage171forinstructions.
Step7.Removetheheatsink.
Attention:Donottouchthethermalmaterialonthebottomoftheheatsink.Touchingthethermal
materialwillcontaminateit.Ifthethermalmaterialonthemicroprocessororheatsinkbecomes
