Safe & Sound
McAfe e Utilities Sa fe & Sound lets you creat e backup sets in protect e d vo lume
files , which isthe safest and p ref e rred type of backup, and is unique to McAfee
Utilities . A protected volum e file is a sectioned-off area of the d rive, sometimes
called a logical drive. Safe & Sound’ s protec ted volume files hav e some very
special characteristics that let Safe & Sound reconstruct backup files sector by
sector, even if the drive’s standard FAT is d amaged or completely lost. In fact,
filescan be largely reconstructed even iflar ge partsof the drive are unreadable
or erased .
The p rotect e d volume file also includes e nough information in eac h dir e ct ory
entry to completely reconstru ct a file’sentire directory treeev en if allits parent
nodes are erased.
Saf e & Soun d provides internal redunda ncy in t he p ro tected volume file
backups you create. It doesthisby markingeachsectorof eachfilethat it backs
up with identifying information about th e sector’s conten ts and the file that
sector belongs to. Each se ctor in a p rotected volum e file contains enough
information t o allow files to be reconstructed from their individual sect ors.
Regular backups with Safe & Sound
Your data is very valua b le and costly to recreate. This means that mak ing
frequent or even mi rror backup copies of the i mpor tant data on your d rives is
crucial.Amirror backup copy is alw ays identical to the or iginal infor matio n on
the source drive.
Safe & Sound automates the back-up process, doin g the time-consuming and
repetitive wo rk for you. It lets you decide which types of files to back up, how
often to save them, and where you want the backup set located (on the same
drive, anothe r local drive, or on a sh ar ed ne twork drive). With Safe & Soun d,
you can create mirror backup sets that are, at any given time, an exact replica
of the files you’v e selected to back up on the source drive. You can also specify
a sho rt time delay in the backu p, or back up manually by copying files t o the
backup set on your drive if you prefer.
