The hard disk map
Disk Tune displays a m ap of the hard disk w ith blocks—each block consists of
a v ariable n um ber of clusters, d epending on the disk’s size— c olor coded to
indicate their status.
You can identify the c onte nts o f a bloc k in the hard driv e map by cl icking it.
This is us eful if you want an indic ation of which files make u p a block, w hether
these par ticular fil es are fragmented, o r held (designated as unmovable), and
so on. The file list o f f ers information on the Cluster Number, Con tent s,
Condit ion, Typ e , and Attributes of all the files in the block. You can also click
a column title to sort files by that column.
Setting advanced options
You can access Disk T une’s ad vanced options by clicking the A dvanced
button. T he Defr agmen tation Options dialog bo x appears, which provides
three tabs of options: Functions, File Pla cement and Directory S or t.
The Functions tab
The Functions tab allows you to select the functions, safety level and write
verification l evels.
Zero FreeSpace–zeros outthe free clusters after youfinish tuning the disk.
This w ipes out any leftover data from d eleted files, an d prevents r ecovery
using an und elet e program.
Show Final Orga niza tionshowsthefinalmapofyourdiskonceyouhave
completed defragmentation and optimization.
Single Sector I/Oreads and writes data on a “sin gle s ector by single
sector” basis. T his m ethod is v ery s low but may be necessary for some
types of disk dri ve c ontrollers.
Remove Deleted Directory Entries–remo ves deleted entr ies from
directories and consolidates active entries to optimize direct ories .
Optimize the S wap File–optimizes th e W indows Swap Fileto improve the
performance of your s ystem.
Safe Mo de and Exclusive Lock–in creases the safety of your d ata during
optimization. Safe Mode takes extra steps to ensu re that you will not lose
any drive data even in t he event o f a p ower failure. Exclusive L ock
prevents any other application from accessing your disk d urin g the
tune-up whic h w ould s low down the tu ning proces s.
