McAfee VirusScan
All of the command-line scann ers allow you to initiate targeted scan
operations from an MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window, or
from protected MS-DOS mode. Ordinarily, you'll use the VirusScan
application's graphical u ser interface (G UI) to perform most scannin g
ope rations, but if you have trouble s tarting Wind ows or if the VirusScan
GUI comp onents will not run in your e nvironment, y ou can use the
comma nd-line scanners as a b acku p.
What’s new with VirusScan?
This Vir usScan r elease introduces a n um ber of innovative new features to the
product’s c ore functionality, to its rang e of coverage, and to the details of its
application architectur e. The single mo st significant change between previous
VirusScan versions and this release, however, is the integration of two
separate VirusScan versions optimized to runo n separate Windows platforms
into a single product that runs on both. This single product also takes full
advantage of each platform’s strengths.
The next sections discuss other ch anges that this VirusScan release i ntroduces.
Installation and distribution features
McAfee anti-virus products, includin g VirusScan software, now use the
Mic rosoft Windows Installer (MSI), which comes with all Windows 2000
Professional syste ms. T his Setup utility offe rs a wealth of c ustom ins tallatio n
and configuration features th at make VirusScan software rollout across l arge
organiz ations m u ch easier a nd more intuitive.
Interface enhancements
This relea se moves the VirusScan interface for a ll suppo rted p latforms solidly
into the territory VirusScan anti-virus software for Windows 95, Win dows 98
and Windows ME pioneered with i ts v 4.0.1 release. This add s extensive
VShield scanner co nfiguration options for the Windows N T Workstation v4.0
and Windows 2000 Professional p latforms, while reducing the c omplexity of
some prev ious configuration options. Ale rt Mana ge r serv e r configuration , f or
example, moves entirely o ver t o the NetShield product l ine—VirusScan
software now acts strictly as a conf igurable client application.
This release also adds a new VirusScan control panel, which fun ctions as a
central point from which you can enable an d disable all V irusScan
components. This con trol pane l also lets you set a ceiling for the num b er of
items you can sca n in or exclude from a single operation, and can set the
VShield scanner and VirusScan control panel to run at startup. Other changes
