• New interface settings for task config uration allow you to tell the
VirusScan application how you w ant it t o appear as your sch eduled task
ru ns and wha t you want it to do when it finish es. You can also set a
password to protect individual task settings from changes, or to protect an
entire task configuration at once.
• An upd ated randomization feature for scheduled tasks allows you to set a
time for the task to run, then set a randomization “window.” The
VirusScan Console then picks a random time within the window to
actually start the task.
• System Scan module action options now include a new Pro mpt Type
configuration o p tion fo r Windo ws 95 a nd W indo ws 98 systems. This
option lets you determine how the Prompt for user action alert a ppears.
Changes in product functionality
• A ne w Alert Manag er Client conf iguration util ity allows yo u t o cho ose an
Alert Manager server installed on your network as an alert message
destination, or to select a network share as a destination for Centralized
Alerti ng m es sages. Y ou can also supplement either of these alert m ethods
with Des ktop Management Interface alert mes sages.
• The Alert Manager server suppor ts Intel Pentium III processo r s erial
numbers to identify individual machines for virus notification. For more

New update options for your VirusScan software
Even wit h the majority of the virus definitions it requi res now incorporated
di rect ly into its engine in generic routines, VirusSc an software still requires
regular .DAT file updates to keep pace w ith the 200 to 300 new viruses that
appear eac h month. To meet this need, McAfee has incorporated updating
techno logy in Virus Scan software from its ea rliest inc arnations. With this
release, that technology takes a quantum leap forwardwith incremental .DA T
file updating.
