From the System tray
You can access many of the main P GP functions by clicking the l ock icon,
which is normally located in the System tray, and then choosing the
appropriate m enu item. (If you can’t find th is icon in your System tray, run
PGPtray fro m the Start men u).
Performing PGP functions from the clipboard
You w ill notice that many of the option s on the System tray r efer to PGP
functions that you perform from the Win dows clipboard. If you are using an
email application that is not supported by the PGP plug -ins, or if you are
working with t ext generated by some other appli cation, you perform your
encryption/decryption and signature/ verification functions via t he Wind o ws
clipboard.
For instance, to en crypt or s ign text, yo u copy i t from your application to t he
clipboard, encrypt and sign it using th e appropri ate PGP functions, then paste
it back into your app lica tion before sending it to the inte nde d recipients. When
you receive an encrypted or s igned ema il m es sage, you s imply reverse the
process a nd copy the encry pted t ext, known as ciphertext from your
app lication to the clipboard, de crypt a nd verif y t he infor mation, and then
view the contents. After you view the decrypted m essage, you can decide
wheth er to save the information or r etain it in its encrypted form.
Opening the PGPkeys window
When you choose Launch P GPkeys from the P GP pop-up menu, the PGPkeys
window opens, showing the pr ivate and publi c key pairs you have created fo r
yourself as well as any public keys of other users that you have ad ded to your
public keyring. (If you have no t already created a new k ey pair, the PGP Key
Generation Wizard leads you through the necessary steps. From the PGPkeys
window you can creat e new key p airs and manage a ll of yo ur oth e r keys. For
instance, this is where you examine the attributes associated with a particular
key, sp e cify how confident you a re that the key actually belo ngs t o the al le ge d
own er, an d indicate how well you trust the owner of the key to vouch for the
auth enticity of other users’ keys.
Setting PGP Preferences
When you choosePGP Preferences from the PGP pop-up menu, you accessthe
PGP Preferences dialog box i n which you s pecify settings that affect how the
PGP program f unct ions based on your comput ing env iro nment . By clicking
the appropriate tab, you can advance to the preferen ce settings you want to
modify.
