When a PGPdisk volume is mounted, you can u se it as you would an y other
disk. You ca n install applicatio ns within the volu me, move or save your files
to the volume. When the volume is un mounted, it is unacc essible to anyone
who does not know your secret passphrase, which is a longer version of a
password. Even a mounted volume is protected as it it stored in encrypted
format, unle ss a file or application is in use. If yo ur computer crashes while a
volume is mounted, the volume’s content remains encrypted.
Creating a new PGPdisk volume
1. Start PG Pdisk. Clic k start in the Wind ow s taskba r, point to p ro grams , then
PGP. Next, select P GP disk.
2. Cl ick New. The PGPd isk Wizard displays on your s creen. Read t he
introductory i nformation.
3. Cl ick Next; specify the name and location of the new v olume; then c lick
Save.
4. Enter the amount of space you want to reserve for the new volume in th e
PGPdisk Size field. Use whole numbers, no decimal points. You can use the
arrows to increase or decrease the number displayed on the field.
5. Click the appropriate radio button to select kilobytes, megabytes, or
gigabytes. D epending o n the amount of space available, you c an create a
volum e of any size between 10 0 kilobytes and 2 gigabytes.
6. SelecttheletterofthedrivewhereyouwanttomountyourPGPdisk
volum e . Click Next.
7. Enter the string of words or characters that will serve as you passphrase to
access the new volume (also called the volume’s master passphrase). T o
confirm your entry, press T ab to advanc e to the next text box , then reenter
the same p assphrase to confirm. The minimum s ize allo wed fo r a
passphr ase is 8 c haracters.
As an added l evel of security, the c haracters you enter for the passphrase
are not visible on the screen. However, if you want to see the characters as
you type them, you c a n c lick the Hide Typing check b o x.
NOTE: Passphrase should contain more than one word, along with
spaces, numbers, and other recognizable characters. Choose something
you a re very f ami liar wit h. It is im port ant t hat you do not forget your
passphrase or you will lose your d ata.
8. Click Next.
