When you r ebuild t he Registry using the Regis try Wizard Tune Up option, the
current Registry files are saved in your Windows directory as system.hlx
and user.hlx. In t he unlikely even t that you encounter any problems in
Windows after a tune up, you can restore your original Registry by pressing
F5 when you see the Starting W indows message when you boot, and by then
typing REGUNDO at the C:> prompt.
After you sele ct Tune-up and click the Ne xt > button in t he Registry W izard,
it d isplays the Reg istry Wizard - Optimiz e dialog box asking you to exit all
currently running programs before you continue.
To tune up the Registry:
1. Exit all programs that are running. Be sure you check the taskbar and
close any programs that you ’ve minimized as wel l.
2. Click Next >.
Regi stry Wizard displays a message explaining that a new c o py o f your
Registry has been created, and you need to restart W indows to apply the
new Registry.
3. Click Finish.
4. Clic k the Start button and choose the Shut D own command.
5. Select the Restart the Computer option. T hen click Yes to restart
W indo ws a nd app ly the ne w Registry.
Registry Pro
Registry Pro (for Windows 95/98 only) lets you perform advanced editing o f the
valueentries forkeyhandles (the top level folders) andtheirsubordinatechild
keys in the Windows 95/98 Registry database. W ith Registry Pro, you can
troubleshoot and r epai r start-u p files d efined as entries in the Registry. You
can import and export registry files, find entries containing specified text, or
find orphans (entries for pr ograms that h ave moved or no longer exist).
TIP: Choose Key Info from the Help men u to get information on any
selec ted key.
Finding a Registry entry
Choose the Find comman d from the Search menu (or press CTRL-F3). Then
enter the value to sear ch for, select where to search, what to display, and other
search options. Then click Fin d.
