• The Alert Manager Client configuration u tility . This component lets you
choose a destination for Alert Manager “events” that VirusScan software
generates when it detects a virus or takes other noteworthy actions. You
can also specify a des tination directory for older-style Centralized Alerting
messages, or s upplement either method wi th Desktop Managem ent
Interface (DMI) alerts sent via your DMI client software.
• The ScreenScan utility. This optional compo ne nt scans your computer as
your screen s aver runs during idle periods.
• The S e ndViru s u tility . This component gives you an easy a nd painle ss
way to su bmit f ile s that you believe are in f ected directly t o McAfe e
anti-virus researchers. A simple wizard guides you as you choose files to
sub mit, include contact det ails and, if you pref e r, strip out any p ersonal or
confidential data from document files.
• The E mergency D isk c reation u tility . T his es sential util ity helps you to
create a floppy d isk that you c an use to boot your computer into a
virus-free environment, then s c an essential s yst em areas to rem ove any
viruses th at could load at startup.
• Command-line scanners. This component consists of a set of full-featured
scanners you can use to run targeted scan operations from the M S-DOS
Prompt or Command Prompt windows, or from protected MS-DOS mode.
The set includes:
– SCAN.EXE, a scanner for 32-bit environments only. This is the
primary command- line interface. When you run this file , it first
che cks its environment to see whether it can r un by itself. If your
computer is r unning in 16-bit or protecte d mode, it will trans f er
control to one of the other scanners.
– SC ANPM.EXE, a scanner for 16- and 32-bit envi ronments. T his
scan ner provides you with a fu ll set of scanning options for 16- and
32-bit pr otected-mode DOS environments. It also includes suppo rt
for extended memory and flexible memory allocations. SCAN.EXE
will transfer control to t his s c anner when its specialized c apabilities
can en able your scan operation to r un more efficiently.
– SCAN86.EXE, a scanner for 16-bit environments only. This scanner
inclu des a limited set of capabilities geared to 16-bit environments.
SCAN.EXE will transfer control to this scanner if y our computer is
running in 16-bit mode, but without special memory configurations.
– B OOTSCAN.EXE, a smaller, spe cialized scanner for use p rimarily
wit h the Em e rgency Disk utilit y. This scanner o rdinari ly runs from
a floppy disk you create to provide you with a virus-free boot
environm ent.
