McAfee VirusScan
• The VShield scanner. This compone nt gives yo u c on tinuous a nti-virus
protection from viruses that arrive on fl oppy disks, from your network, or
from various sources on the Internet. The VShield scanner starts w hen you
start your computer, and stays in memory until you shut down. A flexible
setofpropertypagesletsyoutellthescannerwhichpartsofyoursystem
to e xamine, what to lo ok for, which parts to leav e alone , and how to
respond to a ny infected files it find s. In addition, the s can n er can alert you
when it finds a virus, and can summarize each of its actions.
The VS h ield scanner comes with three other specialized modules that
guard against hostile Java applets and ActiveX controls, that scan e-mail
messages and attachments that you receiv e from the Internet via Lotu s
cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail or other ma il client s that comply with M icroso ft’s
Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI ) stan dard, and that
block access to dangerous Internet sites. Secure password protection for
your configuration o ptions pr even ts o t hers from m aking unaut horized
changes. The same convenient dia log box controls co nf iguratio n optio ns
for all VShield m o dules.
• Safe & Sound.Thiscomponent allowsyoutocreatebackupsetsin
protected volume files, which is th e safest and preferred type of backup. A
protected volume file is a sec tioned-off area of the drive, s om etimes called a
logical drive.
NOTE:Safe & Sound is only available for Windows 95, 98 and
Windows M E.
• Quarantine. T his comp onent a llows you t o move infect ed file s to a
quaran tine folder. T his m o ves infected fil es from areas where they can be
access ed and enables you t o clean or delete them at your convenience.
• The E-Mail S can extension. This component allows yo u to scan you r
Microsoft Exchange or Outlook mailbox, or public folders to which you
have access, directly on the server . This invaluable “x-ray” peek into your
mailbox means t hat VirusSc an software can find poten tial infections befor e
they make their way to your desktop, which can stop a Melissa-like virus
in its t racks.
• A cc:Mail scanner. This compone nt includes technology optimiz ed for
scanning Lotus c c:Mail mailboxes that d o not use the M API standard.
Install and use this component if your workgroup or network uses cc:Mail
v7.x or earlier.
