If BOOT SCAN .EX E finds a virus , it wil l try to clean the infe cted file. If it
fails, it wi ll deny ac cess to the file and co ntinue the scan operation. Af ter
it finishes all of its scanning passes, it shows a su mmary report the
actions it took for each hard disk on the screen. The report tells y ou:
• Ho w many files the scanner examined
• Ho w many files of that number are clean, or uninfected
• How many files contain potential infections
• Ho w many files of that number the scanner cleaned
• How many boot sector and MBR files the scanner examined
• How many boot sector and MBR files contain potential i nfections
If the scanner detects a virus, it beeps and r eports the name and location
of the virus on the screen.
6. When the scanner finishes examining your hard d isk, rem ove the
Em ergency Disk from your floppy dri ve, then s hut your computer off
again.
7. When B OOT SCAN.EXE finis hes examining your system, you can either:
• Retu rn to work ing with you r computer. If BOOTSCAN.EXE did
not find a virus, or if it cleane d any infected files it did find, r e mo ve
the Emergency Disk from your floppy drive, then restart your
computer norm ally. If you ha d planne d to install V irusScan
software on your computer bu t stopped when Setup found an
i nf ection, you can now continue with you r inst allation.
• T ry to clean or d elete inf ected files you rself. If BOOTSCAN.EXE
found a virus that i t could not remove, it will identify the infected
fil es and tell you that it could not cl ean the m, or t hat it does not have
a current remover for the infecting virus.
A s your next ste p , locate and dele te the infe cted f ile or files. Y ou will
need to restore any files that you delete from backup files. Be sure to
check your backup files for infections also. Be sure al so to use the
VirusS can ap plication at you r earlies t oppor tunity to scan your s ystem
completelyinordertoensurethatyoursystemisvirus-free.
