McAfee Utilities
In advanced file placemen t configurations, you c an d ecide where on the disk
var ious f ile groups will be located. Disk Tu ne divides the disk int o fiv e
regions: Top, High, Middle, Low, and Bottom, and it lets you specify in which
of t hese regions t he various file ca tegorie s are placed. In addition to the default
file categories, Disk Tune lets you create two categories of your own file types,
such as help files, graphic images, and so on. You can also group recently
modified files and allocate sp ecific areas o f the disk to hold them. The dialog
boxes where you specify file charac teristics of any of these customize s file
groups are identical, allowing you to creat e file groups fo r your own exact
requirem ents .
Initia lly, you need to identify the file type s to inc lude in your group in the F ile
Spe cifications text bo x, using the adjacent Ad d, Remove, or Clear All b uttons.
After you click Add, y ou c an find individual files to add to your list. Disk Tune
lets you use wildcards in the Add d ialog box to locate all files of a c ertain typ e.
For exam ple, entering *.HLP lo cates all the help file s. You can find all files o n
your drive, or limit your search for all files in a direct ory (including or
excluding subdirectori e s). Cl icking the msoffice directory and entering the
file name *.HLP creates a fil e specifica tio n of \msoffice\*.HLP,which
locates all the help files in the Micr osoft Office directory. You can also inc lude
or excl ude fi les that are greater than, or less than, a spec ific size range.
You r other options include:
Using the o p erators And and Or, so you can group all files you have selected
in the File Specifications t ext box. And or Or files must meet the criteria you
specify in the other check boxes, such as:
Th e condition of you r files (Fragmented, Opt imiz ed or S traddled) .
The attributes of your files, (such as Arc hive, Read-only, or Hidden) .
Th e d ate range of your files, where y ou can specify a date rang e (in
dd/m m/yyyy fo rma t) when the files were last mo dified, last accessed
and/or created.
In most cases, the d efaults provided by Disk Tune should work fine.
Occasionally, you may need to customize the positions of file categories on
your disk. Ingeneral, files you do not modify, but access frequently, should be
placed as hig h (near the beginning) on the disk as possible to improve access
times. Files that you frequently modify should be placed as close to the free
space as possible, to decrease the amount of work you r system has to do.
