Steeringcylinderphasing
Thesteeringcylindersre-phaseattheendofeachstroke.Everytimethecylindersreachtheendofthestroke,they
re-timethemselvesandcompensateformisalignment.Thisproceduremustbedoneseveraltimesaday.Asharp
turnattheendoftheeldwillaccomplishthis.Whenthecylindersreachtheendofthestroke,keepturningthe
steeringwheeltopurgetheoilinthesystem,whichrealignsthecylinders.Repeatthisprocedurebyturninginthe
otherdirection.Thefrequencyofthisprocedurewillincreaseasthesealsinthecylinderswear.Ifthecylindersseem
todrift,seeyourdealerforasealrepairkit.
4Wheelsteer(ifequipped)
Ifwheelslefttorightarenotinalignment,phasingofthecylinderswillberequired.Switchto4WSmodeandin
adequateareaproceedtosteerandholdhardright,thenhardleftwhiledrivinginagureeightmotion.Thephasing
willsynchronizetheleftandrightwheels.
Phasingsteercylinders
1.Starttheengineandwiththevehicleintwowheel
steer,turnthefrontwheelsfullleftandthenfullright
topurgealltheairoutofthesteercylinders.Dothis
severaltimes.Holdthesteeringwheelhardoverto
completelypurgealltheair.RepeatinCALmodeus-
ingthegreenbuttonsonthedisplaytosteertherear
wheels.Switchtothe4wheelsteermodeanddrive
thevehicleinagureeightpattern,steeringhardleft
andthenhardright.Holdthesteeringwheelhardover
tocompletelypurgealltheair.Dothisatleast6to8
times.
2.Checkforanyleaks.
3.Whiledrivingthevehicle,usethelegwideningswitch
andretractthelegwideningcylindersallthewayin.
Besureallfourcylindersarecompletelyretractedby
visualinspection.
4.Besureyouareonlevelground,disconnectthe
suspensionlinkagerodsfromthesuspensionvalves
andpositionthesuspensioncylinderssotheyare
extendedwithin6.350mm(0.250in)ofeachother.
5.Manuallysteerthefrontandrearwheelsuntilthesteer
cylindersareathalfstroke.Measurefromtheedge
ofthecylinderbarreltothebeginningofthewrench
grooveintherodjustbehindtheclevis.Thisdimen-
sionmustbe28.89cm(11.38in)(A)for4WSunits
only.For2WSunitsthisdimensionmustbe15.558cm
(6.125in)(A).
