Diagonal shading in the cutting direction of the knife which can be seen and felt as
wavy zones.

Cause Remedy
Knives which were overheated during
resharpening have soft zones which get
dull very quickly.
Resharpen the knife with sufficient coolant
supply. The soft zones must be com-
pletely removed.
Too acute a cutting edge angle causes
swelling at densely printed positions.
Grind a bigger angle (for example, from
22° to 24°).
The knife is too soft. Use a different type of knife (carbide).
