8.UsetheLinkBudgetCalculator(ontheCDsuppliedwiththeequipmentorusingthe
RADWINManager)todeterminetheexpectedperformance.
Stage2:PhysicalSurvey
Thephysicalsitesurveyreviewstheenvironmentoftheproposedinstallationlocation,to
ensurethatthesectorsitesaresuitableforthewirelessnetwork.Theresultsofthephysical
sitesurveyshouldberecorded.
Inwhatfollows,ODUmaybeanHBSorafixedHSU:
Toperformaphysicalsurvey:
1.Fromthecompassreadingstakeninthepreliminarysurvey,findtheazimuth(hori‐
zontalposition)thateachfixedHSUshouldfacetowardstheHBS.
2.Usingbinoculars,locateanyobstructionssuchastalltrees,highbuildings,hillsor
mountains.LookforotherRFtowersbetweenthetwosites.Markthelocationsof
theobstructionsonthemap.
3.DeterminethelocationfortheODUs(havingregardforexistingrooftopinstallations
andtowerspace).Theyshouldbeaboveanyobstructions,consideringtheFresnel
zone(seeChapter23).
4.IfyouneedtoinstallanytypeofODUonatower,makesurethatthetowerisfar
enoughfromoverheadelectric powerlines.
5.Determinealocationfortheindoorequipment;itshouldbeascloseaspossibleto
theODU.Atanexistingsite,thereisprobablyanequipmentroomwithcable‐routing
channels.
6.MeasureandrecordthepathlengthofthecablefromeachODUpositiontothe
indoorequipmentroom.

Itisadvisabletogoonaclearday,soyoucanmoreeasilyseeany
obstructionsbetweenthetwosites.
