F IRMWARE
Determining the Firmware Version in Your Relay
To find the firmware revision number in your relay, view the status report using the serial port
STATUS command or the front-panel STATUS pushbutton. The status report displays the
Firmware Identification Data (FID) label with the Part/Revision number in bold:
FID=SEL-387E-Rxxx-Vx-Z001001-Dxxxxxxxx
The FID string is included near the top of each long event report, and is also available using the
STA or SER serial port commands. Part of it is available using the STATUS pushbutton, as
noted above. The firmware revision number follows the “R” and the release date follows the
“D.” The version number (follows the “V”) is zero for the SEL-387E because there are no
version options at this time.
For example:
FID=SEL-387E-R100-V0-Z001001-D20000216
is SEL-387E Relay firmware revision number 100 which was released on February 16, 2000.
Note: The hardware in SEL-387E Relays with R601 and subsequent firmware is different than
the hardware in SEL-387E Relays with R1xx and R2xx series firmware. The hardware
associated with R6xx firmware is incompatible with R1xx and R2xx series firmware.
You can upgrade R1xx or R2xx firmware to any other firmware numbered R1xx or
R2xx. However, you cannot upgrade R1xx or R2xx firmware to R6xx firmware.
Similarly, you cannot downgrade R6xx firmware to R1xx or R2xx firmware.
Note: With the addition of Ethernet capabilities, introduced in R701, the main board changes
made to support this functionality are not backwards compatible with any previous
versions of firmware (R1xx, R2xx, R6xx).
Table A.1 lists the firmware versions, a description of modifications, and the instruction manual
date code that corresponds to firmware versions. The most recent firmware version is listed first.
