1.1 Definitions of terms
A batch is the equipment-dependent quantity of a product which can be
produced discontinuously in a defined production procedure.
A batch is that quantity of a product which is produced in a single and
uniform execution of a batch process.
In the automation of batch processes, the product is produced in accordance
with defined instructions (the recipe) and not continuously but
discontinuously (portion by portion in batches):

From batch process to recipe
A recipe is a set of instructions for producing a product by a particular
process. It describes what is needed and what must be done to execute the
process. There are apparatus recipes and control recipes. When the term
recipe is used in the following description, an apparatus recipe is meant.
With BATCH flexible a recipe is created on the basis of PLC user structures
which have been designed with CFC/STEP7 tools in accordance with specific
sets of instructions. The procedural structure is defined with the aid of SFC
verification structures (as per DIN/IEC 1131) and of conditions in the
transitions.
The SFC (Sequential Function Chart) is an appropriate way of displaying
(procedural description) the entire set of process instructions, with sequential
and parallel steps, and which is needed for the clear and readily
understandable control of processes.
