Verify
Surface
Test
The
Verify
Surface
operation
is
started
by
pressing
key
"6"
followed
by
the
ENTER
key
on
the
Main
Menu.
This
function
checks
the
surface
of
a
formatted
disk;
detecting
any
defective
1
j
tracks.
The
test
will
update
the
BTT
when
it
finds
a
bad
sector.
Once
a
bad
sector
of
a
track
is
found,
any
additional
bad
sectors
n
found
on
the
same
track
are
ignored
as
all
the
sectors
on
the
track
will
be
marked
bad.
The
test
has
a
multiple
loop
capability
option,
which
will
request
from
the
user
the
number
of
passes
to
run.
The
default
number
of
retries
is
set
at
2
in
the
Verify
Surface
Test.
Therefore,
after
two
retries,
the
sector
is
considered
bad.
Finding
a
bad
sector
(then
track)
during
the
VERIFY
SURFACE
TEST
doesn't
cause
an
error
to
be
displayed
unless:
1.
When
the
total
number
of
bad
tracks
found
on
the
HDU
exceeds
the
maximum
permissible
number,
the
following
message
is
displayed:.
TOO
MANY
ERRORS
ON
DRIVE
VERIFY
SURFACE
TEST
FAILED
PRESS
'ENTER'
KEY
TO
CONTINUE
This
maximum
number
is
dependent
on
the
size
of
the
HDU
and
the
algorithm
is:
either
64
bad
tracks
total,
or
2
bad
tracks
per
megabyte
of
formatted
storage,
whichever
is
larger
(64
for
storage
up
to
32
MB
and
for
higher
storage
2N
megabyte/megabyte).
