Introductiontobiodieselfuel
FattyAcidMethylEster(FAME)biodieselfuel,called
biodieselfuelinthefollowingparagraphs,consistsofa
familyoffuelsderivedfromvegetableoilsthatproducers
treatwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:Rapeseed
MethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).
RMEisablendofrapeseedandsunowermethyles-
ter.RMEisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthe
preferredcropintheUnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Its
useanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especially
inEuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:ItisimperativethatyoucheckwithyourCASE
CONSTRUCTIONdealertolearnwhichbiodieselfuel
blendCASECONSTRUCTIONapprovesforuseinyour
engine.Beawarethattheuseofbiodieselfuelblends
thatdonotcomplywithASTMD6751couldcausesevere
damagetotheengineandfuelsystemofyourmachine.
Theuseofnon-approvedbiodieselfuelblendsmayvoid
CASECONSTRUCTIONWarrantycoverage.
Biodieselfuelblendsusethefollowinglabelstoindicate
thepercentageofbiodieselfuelintheblend:
•
B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieselfueland95%
dieselfuel.
•
B7:indicatestheblendof7%biodieselfueland93%
dieselfuel.
•
B20:indicatestheblendof20%biodieselfueland
80%dieselfuel.
•
B100:indicates100%biodieselfuel.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparison
withdieselfuel:
•
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel.Additionallu-
bricityisbenecialinmanycircumstances,particularly
asfuelscontainlesssulfurandaromatics.
•
Biodieselfuelhasagreatercetanenumberandburns
morecleanly.
•
Biodieselfuelproduceslessparticulatematterandre-
ducessmokeemissions.
•
Biodieselfuelisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.

Oils.(15ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Thefollowingstandardsapplytobiodieselfuelblends:

UnitedStatesDieselFuelSpecicationASTMD6751
allowsupto5%biodieselsince2009.UnitedStates
fuelsuppliersareallowedtouseupto5%biodiesel
fuel(B5)tosupplythenetwork.
•
UnitedStatesBiodieselFuelSpecicationASTM
D7467providesspecicationsfordieselandbiodiesel
blendsfromB5toB20.
Thefollowingstandardsapplytopurebiodieselfuel
(B100):
•
ASTMD6751-Standardspecicationforbiodieselfuel
blendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
NOTE:ASTMupdatedASTMD6751toimprovethe
qualityofbiodieselinthemarketplace.
Beforeproducerscanconvertrawoilintousablebiodiesel
fuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglyc-
erides.Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoilre-
actswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinfromthefator
vegetableoil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwoproducts:
methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)andglyc-
erin(abyproductusuallysoldforuseinsoapsorother
products).
NOTICE:CASECONSTRUCTIONonlyapprovestrans-
esteriedbiodieselfuelblendsthatcomplywithASTM
D6751.
NOTICE:Non-transesteriedfuelsmadefromrapeseed
oilorsimilarhighoilcontentcropsincludecold-pressed
biodiesel,cold-pressedoil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),
ormoregenerallyunrenedvegetableoilsusedasmotor
fuel.Becausethesetypesoffuelarenottransesteried,
theydonotfulltherequirementsofASTMD6751.There
isnorecognizedqualitystandardavailableforthese
typesoffuel;therefore,CASECONSTRUCTIONDOES
NOTAPPROVEtheuseofcold-pressedbiodiesel,
cold-pressedoil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormore
generallyunrenedvegetableoilsasmotorfuelatany
blendinanyCASECONSTRUCTIONproduct.
NOTICE:CASECONSTRUCTIONwilldiscontinueWar-
rantycoverageofanyengineequipmentandfuelinjection
equipmentyouttoaCASECONSTRUCTIONmachine
thatisfoundtohaverunwithblendofNON-APPROVED
fuel(fuelthatdoesnotfullltherequirementsofASTM
D6751).
Biodieselfuelusageconditions
Youmuststringentlyfollowthebiodieselfuelusagecon-
ditions.Incorrectapplicationofthebiodieselfuelusage
conditionscouldleadtoseveredamagetotheengineand
fuelinjectionequipmentandaftertreatmentsystem.
