ComNav P4 Installation and Operation
Document PN 29010100 V1r0 - 70 -
Electrical Checks for SPU
Only after all these checks have been completed should you connect the power plug into
the
JI BATTERY INPUT receptacle on the SPU.
1. Check the power supply wiring (from the battery/breaker).
2. Verify that the polarity and voltage are correct (use an accurate voltmeter for this).
3. Check for correct wire size, tightness of all connections, fusing, and proper operation
of
the battery power breaker or switch.
4. Check the connections from the Compass(es) to the SPU.
5. Check the connections from the Rudder Follower Unit to the SPU.
6. Check that when the rudder is manually moved from full Starboard to full Port (and
vice-
versa), that the RFU moves completely freely, and is not being restricted in any way.
7. Check the connection(s) from the Control Head(s) to the SPU.
8. Check the connections to the drive equipment from the SPU.
9. Check that all cables are neatly routed and secured.
10. Ensure that extraneous materials (bits of insulation, wire pieces or strands, etc.)
have
been removed.
Caution! During the first few weeks of operation, repeat the checks above at least once.
WIRING FOR P4
Completing the Wiring
1. Many potential problems can be avoided by ensuring that cabling and wiring do
not cause strain on the connectors.
2. Route all the wires and cables sideways out from the SPU (to the left and/or right,
as
appropriate). Use external tie-downs or cable holders to keep the wires and
cables secure,
with no excess strain on them, or on the plugs that are mated to the
SPU’s receptacles.
3. If the SPU is mounted on a vertical surface, route all wires and cables downwards,
within a
few centimetres of the edge of the SPU. If the SPU has been mounted on
a horizontal
surface, form drip loops in all wires and cables, close outside the
edges of the SPU.
4. Finally, carefully re-install the Wiring Cover on the SPU. Be sure not to pinch any
of the
wires or cables between the Wiring Cover and any other part of the SPU.
5. Secure the Wiring Cover with the two knurled thumb-nuts.
6. Ensure that the cabling and wiring to all system components, especially
Remote
Controls, are well secured with clamps or alternative fasteners.
