6.3 Creating volumes using the Volume Creation

This section focuses on using the Volume Creation operation to create Basic and Mirrored

volumes in a system with standard topology. It also covers creating host-to-volume mapping.

As previously stated, Volume Creation is available on four different volume classes:

򐂰 Basic

򐂰 Mirrored

򐂰 Custom

򐂰 HyperSwap

6.3.1 Creating Basic volumes using Volume Creation

The most commonly used type of volume is the Basic volume. This type of volume is fully

provisioned, with the entire size dedicated to the defined volume. The host and the IBM

Spectrum Virtualize system see the fully allocated space.

Create a Basic volume by clicking the Basic icon as shown in Figure 6-14 on page 304. This

action opens an additional input window where you can define the following information:

򐂰 Pool: The pool in which the volume is created (drop-down)

򐂰 Quantity: The number of volumes to be created (numeric up/down)

򐂰 Capacity: Size of the volume in units (drop-down)

򐂰 Capacity Savings (drop-down):

– None

– Thin-provisioned

– Compressed

򐂰 Name: Name of the volume (cannot start with a numeric)

򐂰 I/O group

Note: The ability to create HyperSwap volumes using the GUI simplifies creation and

configuration. This simplification is enhanced by the GUI using the mkvolume command.
