McAfee VirusScan
At first, the scanner enables only its System Scan module, which scans viruses
that arrive on your system from floppy disks and other r emovable media,
from local-area network connections, and similar areas. The System Scan
mod ule also scans files that arrive via your e-mail system and from the
Internet, but to do so, it requires t he a id of t he other VS hie ld m odules : E -Mail
Scan, Dow nload Scan, a nd Inte rnet F ilter.
æ IMPORTANT:To use the E - Mail S can, D ow nload Scan or Internet Filt er
modules, you must install them from the C ustom option in Setup.
If your computer runs Windows NT W orkstation v4.0 or Windows 2000
Professional, the VShield scanner loads as a Windows NT service called
VShield , which you can see in the Wind ows Services control pan el.
NOTE: McAfee recommends that you do not start or stop the VShield
service from the Windows control panel. Instead, you can stop and
restart the scanner from the provided VirusScan control panel.
If your computer runs Windows 9 5 or Windows 98, the scanner loads in a wa y
that mimics a Windows service on that platform. This service is not visible in
the W indows user interface.
Starting the scanner automatically
If the V Shield scanner does not start automatically, you can set it to do so in
the VirusScan contr ol panel.
Follow these steps:
1. Click Start in the Win dows taskbar, point to Settings,thenchoose
Control Panel.
2. Locate and double-click the VirusScan control panel to open it.
3. Click the Components tab.
