6.8.2 PAPER TRANSFER
Transfer Roller
The transfer roller [C] is located inside
the rear cover [A]. The transfer roller
transports the toner images from the
transfer belt to the paper. This image
transfer occurs when the paper passes
between the transfer roller and the
transfer belt. The transfer roller turns at
the same speed as the paper.
Paper Transfer Bias
The high voltage unit (HVU) provides
an electrical bias to the transfer roller.
The transfer roller is positively charged
the toner image is negatively charged.
The left end of the transfer unit is
attached to THV thermal [B] on the
HVU only when the rear cover is closed properly.
Discharge Plate
The transfer unit has a discharge plate [D] above the transfer roller. The discharge
plate quenches paper charged during paper transfer. Quenching helps paper move
away from the transfer roller.
Contact Release Mechanism
The transfer roller is kept from contacting
the transfer belt by the action of the
transfer roller clutch [C].
When the printer prints, and at the
appropriate time, the transfer roller clutch
is energized and makes a one-half turn
rotation. This moves the lobe of the cam
[B] away from the transfer roller lever [A]
allowing the transfer roller to move against
the sheet of paper.
When the sheet of paper has passed, the
transfer roller clutch energizes again
(activates) and the lobe of the cam pushes
the transfer roller lever [A] back, which
moves the transfer roller assembly away
from the OPC belt.
The transfer roller clutch receives its
rotational torque from the main motor.
