Introducing
the SMT
This chapter shows you how to use the SMT (System Management Terminal) to configure a VLC1012.
18.1 Initial Screen
Telnet to the VLC1012’s IP address (192.168.1.1 is the default). If the IP address has changed and you do not
know what it is, refer to the Emergency Console port section in the Troubleshooting chapter. When you turn on
your VLC1012, it performs several internal tests and initializes the ports. If you use the console port, the
VLC1012 asks you to press [ENTER] to continue, as shown below:

18.1.1 Password
The Login screen appears prompting you to enter the password (after you press [ENTER] when using the console
port), as shown in the next figure.
For your first login, enter the default password “1234”. As you enter the password, the screen displays an (X) or
an (*) for each character you type.

The VLC1012 automatically logs you out and displays a blank screen if there is no activity for longer than five
minutes after you log in. Press [ENTER] at the blank screen to bring up the password screen again.
18.2 Navigating the SMT Interface
Use the SMT (System Management Terminal) interface to configure your VLC1012.
Several operations that you should be familiar with before you attempt to modify the configuration are listed in
the following table.
