thewheelrotation(g.8).
vi.Slacken off the star-wheel adjuster until

vii.Check the adjustment at the end of the
brake cable where it is secured to the

ix.Ensure the balance bar (compensation) is
being pulled evenly. This bar (double on
tandemaxles)shouldalwaysbeparalleled
with the axle tube when pulled (gs. 10).
AdjustM8lockandballnuts,ifnecessary,
toachievecorrectparallelposition(Fig.9).
x. Checkthebrakerodsupportbracket(xed
to the oor) is supporting the brake rod
evenly. The brake rod must always run
straight, never bent or curved under any
ttings.Ontandemaxles,usingthedouble
balancebar,abrakerodsupporttube(Part
No.228827)mustalwaysbettedonthe

xi.Remove the slack in the brake rod by
adjusting the long ball nut, rear of the
balance bar, ensuring the overrun lever
makescontactwiththeend ofthetowing
shaft. Over-adjustment to the long ball
nut(Fig.10)couldinducemovementofthe
inner brake cable, reducing the effective
clearanceofthebrakeshoes.Iftheoverrun
lever will not make contact, it is possible
the two lock nuts, forward of the spring
cylinder, are incorrectly adjusted. Loosen
thenutsandadjustthebrakerodasabove
(Figs.8and10).
xii.Adjustthetwolockingnuts,forwardofthe
springcylinder(Fig.9)(onsomechassisa
single Nyloc nut is used) (Fig. 10) to give
1mm of clearance on the spring cylinder.
This cylinder (the energy store for the
handbrake operation) must be able to
rotateonly,notslideonthebrakerod.(See
Fig. 9) If the overrun assembly is tted
withagasstruthandbrakethennospring
cylinder is tted, therefore ignore this
paragraph.)
xiii. Correctadjustmentofthelinkageis
checkedbyoperatingthehandbrakelever
sothat whenthe secondor thirdtoothis
engaged, a slight braking force is felt on
theroadwheels.
xiv. Over-adjustmentofeitherthewheel
brakes or linkage will result in difcult
reversingcausingthewheelsto“lock-up”.
xv.When parking, the handbrake lever must
always be engaged into the fully upright
position (90°). This is to compress the
spring within the spring cylinder and
therebycreateanenergystore,whichwill
automatically engage the brakes further
shouldthecaravanmove.
xvi. If difculty is experienced in
this operation, try easing the caravan
backwards with one hand while engaging
the handbrake fully with the other. This
manoeuvre should not be attempted on a
rearwardsfacingslope. In this casewheel
chocksshouldbe usedcombinedwiththe
handbrake.
