Safety Precautions
Warning: An autopilot is a useful navigation device intended to assist
navigators in determining their position and safe course. Under no circumstances
it shall replace the guidance of human navigation.
Do not use the automatic steering in the following circumstances:
• In the event of poor weather conditions such as poor visibility and extreme weather conditions
• In the event of heavy traffic or in narrow waters
• In places when the use of autopilot is prohibited by law
When using an autopilot follow the guidelines below:
• Do not leave the helm unattended
• Do not place any magnetic materials near all types of compasses used by the autopilot
• Verify the position and course of the vessel periodically
• BE ALERT, always switch to Standby mode and reduce speed in sufficient time to avoid
hazardous situations
Connect the System
A basic P4 system includes these components (excluding external steering system):
1. The Signal Processor Unit (SPU)
2. A P4 Head as the main controller
3. The Rudder Feedback Unit (RFU)
4. A heading input device. This can be any NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 heading sensor such as a
rate compass or GNSS based compass that is capable of providing a heading update rate of
10Hz, or a magnetic or fluxgate compass.
A P4 system can be expanded to include multiple control stations such as a second P4 Head and/or NF4,
TS4.
5. Optional additional P4 Head
6. Optional remote controllers
7. Optional navigation devices to use NAV mode
