Waxing
Daily waxing of the ironing section ensures it is
coated correctly, allowing the flatwork to slide
easily across the cylinder surface. This produces
the best finish on flatwork, eliminates creases,
prolongs return ribbon life, and protects the
flatwork from sticking to the ironing cylinder.
Procedure For Waxing the Unit
1. If the unit is not running, go back to the
Start-Up procedure at the beginning of this
section.
2. Turn the SPEED knob to the slowest
speed.
3. Set the ironer temperature to 300°F
(150°C).
4. Engage the compression roll.
5. On Type R units, turn the DELIVERY le-
ver to the FRONT position.
6. Check the condition of the waxing cloth.
If the waxing cloth feels:
Stiff when it is cool, it is sufficiently
waxed. Skip to the next step.
Limp when it is cool, more wax is
needed.
Use
only Chicago Dryer Company powdered
wax (or a pure Karagami equivalent).
CAUTION
Abrasive chest type cleaners,
pads, and paste wax can
permanently damage the
ironing cylinder and return
ribbons, and void the factory
warranty.
Note:Use only a standard sheet
or table cloth dedicated solely to
waxing the ironing cylinder.
7. Feed the waxing cloth into the center of
the ironing section and sprinkle wax from
side to side across the first half of the
cloth. Hold the trailing edge of the wax-
ing cloth so newly added wax does not
drop onto the canvas feed ribbons.
CAUTION
Never sprinkle wax directly
on ribbons, compression roll,
or ironing cylinder. This will
shorten the expected life of
the return ribbons.
DO NOT overwax. The return
ribbon drive roll cover will
become smooth and the
return ribbons will slip.
WARNING
The waxing cloth will be hot
when it comes out of the unit
and may burn your hands.
Protect your hands.
8. Without adding more wax, feed the wax-
ing cloth into the unit repeatedly to prop-
erly cover the entire ironing cylinder. Feed
the waxing cloth through the center of the
ironing section three times, then three
times at each end of the ironing cylinder.
WARNING
The waxing cloth must
always be cool when it is
stored. A hot, folded waxing
cloth can catch fire by
spontaneous combustion.
