However, if the compliance of the lungs worsens, the ventilation pressure
needed to maintain the selected tidal volume may increase. The
ventilation pressure may even exceed the upper pressure limit.
In this case, the tidal volume actually delivered may be less than the
target volume set by the user. The ventilation pressure limit and/or
respiratory rate may then have to be adjusted to maintain an adequate
respiratory minute volume. If the patient breathes "against" the ventilator
during the inspiration phase, the ventilation pressure increases within the
selected maximum pressure limit until the selected tidal volume has been
safely delivered.
However, ETT leakage may prevent the total ventilator-delivered volume
from reaching the lungs.
