SHARPENING BLADES
Blades may be sharpened by filing or grinding. When
sharpened, maintain blade balance with 1/8 oz/in (19.4
g/cm). Unbalanced blades cause vibration, blade wear,
and shortened blade life, and may harm mechanical
components.
1. Place a wooden block between the blade and
mower housing to prevent the blade from turning.
2. When dressing or sharpening the blade, do not
follow the original grind pattern, see Figure 12D-
15. Grind new cutting edges at an angle as shown
in (b) of Figure 12D-15. Do not grind more than ½
in (13 mm) from the blade.

3. Remove equal amount of blade material from
each side to maintain a balanced blade. Unbal-
anced blades cause vibration and mower dam-
age.
4. Balance the blade using the following steps.
a. Determine if the blade has a lighter end.
b. If necessary, attach a 1/8 oz (3.99g) weight to
the light end, 5” (127mm) from the center of the
blade. If the blade is adequately balanced, this
weight should convert the light end to the
heaviest end.
c. Grind or file the heavy end of the blade until
the blade balances.

WARNING
Mower blades generally have sharp edges. Use cau-
tion when servicing and handling.
NOTICE
Check the blade width. If the blade has more than ½
in (13 mm) ground off, replace the blade.
WARNING
Sharpening blades beyond the allowable 0.5 in
(13 mm) may allow the tip to break off and be thrown
from the mower. Flying pieces of metal can cause
serious personal injury to bystanders and property
damage.
