STEERING
6C-5
SECTION 6C. STEERING UNIT
GENERAL
The power steering unit uses hydraulic flow produced
by the charge pump in the traction pump. A pressure
relief valve located in the traction pump protects the
steering system from pressure damage. The relief
valve is factory set at 1000 psi (6895 kPa).
Power steering is available as long as the engine is
running. The machine can be steered manually without
assistance from the hydraulic system

REMOVAL
1. Drain the hydraulic oil or install a vacuum pump on
the hydraulic tank fill port.
2. Remove the steering tower cover.
3. Tag and remove the hoses from the bottom of the
steering valve. Immediately plug the hoses and
valve to prevent contamination of the hydraulic
system.
4. Remove the roll pin that secures the steering
wheel to the steering column (Figure 6C-2).
5. Remove the steering wheel cap.
6. Using a gear puller or similar device, remove the
steering wheel.
7. While supporting the steering unit, remove the
steering valve mounting nuts at the mounting
bracket and steering column clamps.
8. Remove the steering unit through the bottom of
the housing.
