DRIVE TRAIN

SECTION 4C. DRIVE SYSTEM REPAIRS AND ADJUSTMENTS
GENERAL
Repair of the traction drive pump is limited to adjust-
ment of linkages and cables, tightening of fasteners,
and repair or replacement of components. Replace, do
not adjust worn or damaged components.
A qualified technician should perform adjustments. If
proper adjustment cannot be made, contact an autho-
rized Jacobsen dealer.
DRIVE SYSTEM
The tractor drive system consists of a traction pump
(controlled by the operator) driven by the engine with a
coupling. The traction pump delivers oil to the hydraulic
wheel motors that are directly connected to the front
wheels and rear wheels in the case of a four-wheel
drive model.
The operator controls the oil flow of the traction pump
with the traction control pedal to control the amount od
direction of oil being delivered to the wheel motors.
This system will allow the operator to control variable
speed in both forward and reverse direction with the
traction pedal.
Figure 4C-1. Drive Coupling
TRACTION PUMP COUPLING
The traction pump drive coupling is located in the
engine bell housing, consisting of a nylon drive flange
and a hub on the traction pump shaft.
Removal
1. Remove the traction pump from the engine bell
housing to gain access to the pump drive hub and
to inspect the nylon drive flange.
2. Remove the engine bell housing to gain access to
replace the nylon drive flange.
3. The drive hub can be removed the shaft by loos-
ening the clamp bolt and sliding the hub off of the
pump shaft.
Installation
1. Install the nylon drive flange with the steel bush-
ings in the retaining bolt holes against the flywheel
surface.
2. Install the retaining bolts for the nylon drive flange
with 242 Loctite. Torque to 45 ft-lbs (61 Nm).
3. Position the drive hub on the pump shaft to obtain
a gap between the drive hub and traction pump
housing of 0.317 in (8 mm). Torque the clamp bolt
to 45 ft-lbs (61 Nm).
WARNING
To prevent injury, lower implements to the ground,
disengage all drives, engage parking brake, stop
engine, and remove the key from the ignition switch
before making any adjustments or performing main-
tenance.
Make sure the tractor is parked on a solid and level
surface. Never work on a tractor that is supported
only by a jack. Always use jack stands.
If only the front or rear of the tractor is raised, place
chocks in front of and behind the wheels that are not
raised.
CAUTION
Be careful to prevent entrapment of the hands and
fingers between moving and fixed components of
the machine.
