Residential gateway rules and requirements
G-241W-P and I-241W-T indoor ONTs act as a router that allows each device in the
network to communicate with any other device. The following functions can be
configured on these router ONTs:
• DHCP service
• IP routing and NAT function on the ONT
• DNS requirements
• IGMP functionality
• UPnP
DHCP service
DHCP allows individual clients to obtain IP configuration from a server at start-up.
DHCP can function in one of the following two ways:
• DHCP server for the LAN — An internal DHCP server allocates IP addresses to
all the network devices attached to the ONT.
• DHCP client instances on the WAN — The ONT receives an IP addresses for
each type of client instance from 23 different DHCP servers in the WAN network:
• one DHCP client instance for obtaining a public IP address for HSI data traffic
• one DHCP client instance for VoIP for obtaining a private IP address from the WAN
network for voice (dedicated VLAN)
Figure 13-5 shows a diagram of the LAN (DHCP server) and WAN (DHCP client)
DCHP service on an ONT.
Note — Do not configure the G-241W-P and I-241W-T indoor ONT
as a router for the home network by using a bridge concept for all the
devices in the home.
