Drain the oil from the unit and disconnect the pipework
from the brake housing 12.
All ‘O’ rings, sealing rings and gaskets removed during
dismantling must be discarded and replaced by new ones
on assembly.
Dismantling
Mark relative positions of rear case 21 and brake housing
12 to ensure correct orientation on assembly.
Drain oil from the motor by removing the drainage plug 35.
Unscrew capscrews 1 in correct sequence, as shown at Y,
by one complete turn then by a further complete turn. This
is to maintain squareness between the end cover and
brake housing and prevent damage to brake components.
Finally remove capscrews 1, end cover 2 and gasket 3.
Remove plug 4 and ‘O’ ring 5.
Remove disc spring 6.
Remove piston 7 using a puller screwed into the tapped
hole.
Remove seal ring 8 from the brake piston 7 and seal 9 from
the brake housing 12.
Undo and remove capscrews 10 with washers 11 and
remove brake housing 12 from rear case 21. Remove
spacer 13 and ‘O’ ring 14 from the rear casing.
Withdraw the brake plate pack 15 and spacers 16 and 17.
Shaft 18 may be removed or left in position as required.
Assembly
Assembly is the reversal of the dismantling procedure.
Inspect the outer and inner plates of the brake plate pack
for signs of wear or damage. Plates should not be replaced
individually, replace the entire brake plate pack.
Clean all components and oil before assembly. Grease all
seals and ‘O’ rings with petroleum jelly.
Insert new ‘O’ ring 14 into the rear casing 21.
Align brake housing 12 to the rear casing 21 using the
marks made during dismantling.
Thoroughly degrease capscrews 10 then, after fitting
washers 11, apply JCB Threadlocker & Sealer to the
threads. To maintain squareness, tighten capscrews in a
diametrically opposite pattern to the correct torque.
Build up the brake plate pack, starting with an outer plate
then alternate with inner plates. Grip the pack in a vice and
measure the thickness X which should be between 36.4
and 36.5 mm (1.433 and 1.437 in.). Adjust the thickness
using extra outer plates or shims extra outer plates or
shims (an extra outer plate is preferred to reduce the
number of shims).
Fig 81.
Fit the brake plate pack 15 into the brake housing, starting
with the extra outer plates or shims if used, and then
building as before.
When fitting seal 9 into brake housing 12, ensure that there
is clearance between the brake plates and the seal.
Fit a new seal 8 onto brake piston 7 and insert into the
brake housing 12. Push the piston fully into the brake
housing.
Coat the contact surfaces of disc spring 6 with grease prior
to fitting.
Fit a new gasket 3, replace cover 2 and fit capscrews 1.
Take up the slack by hand then tighten each screw a turn
at a time in the correct sequence as shown at Y K
Fig
82. ( T E-94) to compress the disc spring 6 until all screws
are correctly torqued. Refit plug 4 with a new ‘O’ ring 5.
