Vehicle Electrical Requirements
Brake Controller
In the USA, installing an electric brake controller on the tow vehicle is a legal requirement for all MDCUSA RVs. This controller
ensures that the trailer’s electric brakes engage proportionately during braking, thereby improving vehicle stability and
reducing stopping distances for enhanced towing safety.
It is essential to select a brake controller that is compatible with both your tow vehicle and your MDCUSA RV, and to follow
the manufacturer’s installation instructions closely. Regular maintenance, proper adjustment, and compliance with current
federal and state regulations will ensure optimal performance and safety on the road.
Trailer Connector and Emergency Breakaway Power Supply
All MDCUSA caravans are equipped with a trailer connector system designed to ensure
reliable operation of the trailers driving lights, brake and turn signals aswell as providing
power from your towing vehicle to ensure operation of the emergency breakaway system.
The connector utilizes a SAE J2863 standard for trailer lights and ancillary functions, and
a 50A Anderson plug configuration for charging. This setup is critical because the
caravan’s onboard battery system powers the breakaway system, which must always be
maintained with a proper charge while the vehicle is running..
Trailer Lights
The trailer lights are connected via a 7-pin round plug that adheres to the SAE J2863 standard. The typical pinout for this
standardize connector is as follows Please ensure that your tow vehicle of choice is equipped with a compatible connectors to
ensure proper function of the trailer lighting and acillaries while driving.
Charging RV While Driving
The emergency breakaway system relies on a continuous maintenance charge to ensure
that the onboard trailer battery system remains fully operational. The Anderson plug
connection located on the drawbar provides this charge by linking the caravan’s battery to
the vehicle’s electrical system when the engine is running.
When towing, your vehicle should supply power via a dedicated 50A Anderson plug near
the towbar. This ensures that the caravan’s battery receives a steady maintenance charge
without risking the start battery’s integrity.
