Emergency Breakaway System
The emergency breakaway system on your MDC USA trailer is a crucial safety feature designed to automatically engage the
trailer’s brakes if it detaches from the tow vehicle. This system helps prevent uncontrolled movement, reducing the risk of
accidents or damage. It is essential to regularly inspect the breakaway switch, cable, and battery to ensure proper operation.
Tampering with or disconnecting the system is strongly discouraged, as it must remain functional to comply with legal towing
requirements. If the system malfunctions or components become damaged, consult your MDC USA dealer or a qualified
technician for servicing and replacement.
Connecting the Breakaway
The breakaway lanyard is connected to a simple switch on the drawbar. When connecting the lanyard to the tow vehicle it
should be connected to a solid part of the vehicle. Do not incorporate its connection with the safety chains.
• DO NOT CONNECT THE BREAKAWAY LANYARD TO THE SAME POINT AS THE SAFETY CHAIN SHACKLES.
• DO NOT USE THE BREAKAWAY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE HANDBRAKE AND DO NOT REMOVE THE PIN
AS AN ALTERNATIVE SECURITY MEASURE. REMOVING THE PIN WILL RAPIDLY DISCHARGE THE BATTERY.
• IT IS A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT THAT THE BREAKAWAY BATTERY SOURCE BE CHARGED DURING
TOWING.
Safety Attachment Chains and Load Sling tags
Your MDC USA trailer is equipped with
high-strength safety attachment chains
designed to secure the trailer to your tow
vehicle in case of disconnection. These
chains include
load sling tags that provide
essential information such as load ratings
and compliance with safety standards.
Removing or altering these tags is strongly
discouraged, as they ensure compliance
with legal and safety requirements, assist in
maintenance and inspections, and provide
critical details for proper replacement. If a
tag becomes damaged or illegible, contact
your MDC USA dealer or a qualified service
provider for guidance.
