Calibrating Speakers Automatically with the Speaker Equalizer
1. Program Speaker Rotation including only the Speakers that the SE will be equalizing.
2. Turn ON the SE When the System is powered up, the SE is in the OFF mode.
3. Select an Amplifier – use the MVP Control Panel to activate a volume-controllable
Amplifier. You should use the same Amplifier every time you calibrate a new Speaker. (If
there is any chance that the volume control of this Amplifier has been changed since the
last calibration, the entire calibration process should be repeated for all Speakers.)
4. Press CAL and hold for three seconds. This puts the SE into the calibration mode. The
three-second delay prevents accidental entry into this mode. The pink noise source (a
constant source of noise fed into the System) is activated. The LED display of the SE
begins to flash, indicating that the unit is in the calibration mode.
6. Select the most inefficient Speaker pair use the Sound Pressure Meter to determine
which Speaker pair, in the Chain you are calibrating, produces the least sound pressure.
You may want to use the Auto-Rotate feature to play all the Speaker pairs in the Chain to
be calibrated and note which gives the lowest reading on the SP.
7. Adjust the Amplifier with the most inefficient Speakers selected, use the volume
control of the Amplifier to adjust the SP reading to 76 dB. The LED will display HI or LO
until the correct setting is achieved. At this point, the LED of the SE will display Eq. Press
PN to turn off the pink noise source.
NOTE: During the preceding part of the calibration process it is important that the room is quiet except
for the pink noise signal – otherwise the calibration will not be accurate. (This includes heating, air
conditioning, voices, street noise, etc.)
8. Press AUTO this begins the automatic calibration process. The currently selected
Speaker is taken to be the least efficient and its attenuation is set and stored as
-6dB, the calibration reference point.
9. Rotate Speakers in the Chain press the ROTATE button on the MVP Control Panel and
then the Speaker Chain button to begin the automatic rotation sequence. As each Speaker
pair is activated, the SE will automatically set and store the attenuation level. When one
rotation is completed, the SE Module will exit the calibration mode and turn OFF. At
this point, turn off Speaker rotation by again pressing ROTATE. You may now repeat this
sequence for the other Speaker Chains in your System that have Speaker Equalizers.
NOTE: If you need to replace only one or two Speakers in an already calibrated Chain, you can re-
calibrate these only, without running through the whole automatic rotation process. Simply
repeat steps 2–8, above, reselecting the most inefficient Speaker pair and readjusting the Amplifier
using the pink noise source (if there’s a chance the Amplifier has been adjusted since the last
calibration). After you press AUTO, select a set of uncalibrated Speakers. The Speaker Equalizer will
automatically store the attenuation value for those Speakers. Select any other new Speakers, and
their values will be set, too. When you have completed the recalibration process, press CAL again
to exit the calibration mode.
