4. Some Basic Principles
Label, label, label! In addition to labeling the Switching Modules, label all cables and
connectors. Label both ends of each wire as you connect it, using the position numbers
corresponding to the positions on the Switching Modules, and label both ends of all RCA
cables. You’ll appreciate it later if you have to trace a connection. MTi carries Panduit
®
Pan Code Wire Labeling sheets for this purpose – talk to our Customer Service or
Sales department.
It is advised that you install an AC surge protector between the MVP Control Panel and
the electrical outlet to protect it against transient voltages.
Document your System in the form of a signal flow diagram (see System Diagrams, pages
85-105) and record any special wiring for future reference.
Tie your wiring down loosely as you work using tie-wraps, so that wiring stays untangled,
but is accessible if you need to make any adjustments. When the installation is complete
and the System has been thoroughly tested, you can do a more secure tie down.
For Autosound switching, your component power supply should be capable of generating
enough amperage to ensure optimum performance from your components. Use the Power
Supply Requirement Worksheet on pages 126-127 for help in determining your power
requirement.
5. Wiring Technique
Use at least 18 gauge wire for high-level wiring and 10 gauge wire for Amplifier power and
ground. At MTi, we use a double wire from each terminal strip to the power source to
ensure safe and efficient power transmission. A little extra attention devoted to wiring
during installation will ensure that you get optimum performance from your System.
If you splice any wires, or strip wires to attach them to terminals, use heat shrink tubing or
electrical tape to cover exposed conductors. Be careful not to strip wires while holding them
over Switching Modules, as wire strands may fall on a circuit and short out a component.
Use tie wraps and eye ties (see page 63) to anchor your wire after you complete the wiring
for each Module. Not only does this make the final installation look more professional, there
is also less chance of wires being pinched or pulled. Keep ties loose until testing of the
System is complete, so any problems can be more easily traced. If RCA cables are tie-
wrapped too tightly, the wires inside may break.
Set up a color coding system for your wire – it makes hookup and later tracing much easier.
MTi uses the system on the following page. You may not want to follow this color code
exactly, but if you need to talk with our Customer Service Representatives about your
System, it will minimize confusion if you’re working with the same color code. (MTi can
supply you with all the wire you need for your installation.)
